What is "Listen to the Voice of the Soil from Seto 2025"?

Last year's exhibition.

Pottery and porcelain tableware are a part of our everyday lives.
The starting point for good pottery is good soil.
Seto City in Aichi Prefecture has been producing pottery for over a thousand years.
This is because high-quality clay for pottery could be extracted.

In particular, thanks to the availability of high-quality soil known as "frog-eye clay," which is found nowhere else in the world, a wide variety of products have been created to adapt to the changing times.

(For more details, please see the series "Listen to the Voice of the Soil from Seto 2025 .")

Even a small amount of this high-quality frog-eye clay can be used to great effect, and it is blended with various soils and used in pottery production areas all over the country.
Seto soil is the result of a fortuitous geological history, and the clay you see is a "product" created through division of labor and wisdom.

This second installment will focus on learning about soil and reexamining the relationship between resources, manufacturing, and lifestyle.

LOCAL TOUR "A Journey Through the Earth"

To commemorate "Listening to the Voice of the Soil from Seto 2025," we will once again leave MUJI Nagoya Meitetsu Department Store and hold a local tour in Seto City.

Kasen Mine is a privately owned mine and factory that turns the raw clay of "Gairome" (frog's eye) into clay. The raw clay collected from the mountains cannot be used as is. We asked Kato Akihiro, the representative of Kasen Mine, how to turn raw clay into clay and his thoughts on the decreasing amount of soil.

* Minami Shintaro, the representative of "Hitotsuchi" (Masukichi TRAVEL), will guide you from the meeting place to the site .

A journey through the soil -Kasen Mine Edition-
December 7th (Sunday)
10:00-12:30
Meeting place: Masukichi

We will visit Seto Hongyo Kiln, a pottery manufacturer that has been in business for about 250 years. We will be guided by Yusuke Mizuno, the eighth-generation successor, who treasures the philosophy of "Mingei" and creates handmade products.

This workshop has always used the bounty of nature, making their own materials for clay and glazes. How do they turn clay into clay? How are glazes made?

The pottery from Seto Hongyogyo is beautiful and comfortable. We will learn about the manufacturing culture of this area and the lifestyle of the people behind it.

*The "Kamagaki Path" on the way to "Seto Hongyo Kiln" Shintaro Minami, representative of "Hitotsuchi" (Masukichi TRAVEL), will be your guide.
